Follow these 6 things you need to do to organize your purse today. Don’t hold up the cash register line searching for your wallet anymore. Once you give each item its own place you will be happy you took the time to organize your purse finally.
Never fear – with a little help, your purse can go from disaster to delightful. Since the purse is self-contained, it’s an easy area to manage. Within no time you will master the strategy on how to organize your purse.
Best Way To Clean Your Purse
Do a daily cleanout of purse
Or weekly if you can’t manage daily. Spend 5 minutes and toss all those receipts, gum wrappers, toys, etc. Clean out the crumbs and refill the tissues. It’s a lot easier to find things if your purse isn’t cluttered up with trash.
Use pouches or zipper bags
You’ll want to use pouches or zipper bags to categorize the contents of your purse.
It’s a lot easier to look in a little makeup bag for your lip gloss, instead of hunting around in a jumble of wallet, keys, tissues, and 100 other miscellaneous items.
You’ll find lots of cute zippered bags at local stores you shop and on Amazon (here’s one of my favorites). Or, with back-to-school season upon us, you can grab a few pencil pouches in different colors and put them to good use.
Here’s how I use zipper pouches to organize my purse.
Use the right purse for the job
If your purse is always full to bursting, ask yourself if you actually need to carry around all of those things. If the answer is yes, consider upsizing to a bigger purse.
I’ve recently switched to a much bigger bag for my go-to purse. It’s been so much easier to find what I need in a larger tote style bag than rummaging around in the several pockets in my old purse. Plus, it’s more colorful and I’m loving adding more color into my life right now
I had been hanging on to the old purse because I was trying to make the most of that purchase, but it really wasn’t serving my needs. Now I save that one for times when I want to look a little more polished and keep the larger bag for everyday use.
Keep multiple bags for different uses
I have several bags:
- work bag – like a mini-office with pens, post-its, notebooks, space for my laptop, etc.
- backpack purse – great for day trips and keeping my hands free
- small clutch – for date night (here’s a white pretty pearl one and here’s a black layered clutch)
- camera bag – indispensable for times when I take out the “good” camera
- my “regular” blue purse – for other occasions
I try to keep my possessions on the minimal side, but it’s also important to have the right tool for the job. If your purse is regularly decluttered and you use zipper pouches, it’s a cinch to switch bags.
Cultivate healthy habits for a clean purse
As a busy mom, I know it’s tempting to toss things into your purse when you’re out of the house, but if you slow down and spend an extra minute or two, your purse will stay much more organized. Some habits I try to stick with are:
- Always put my debit card and any change back into my wallet immediately
- Keep my driver’s license clipped together with my car insurance and registration
- Put any receipts directly into my wallet (after I’ve entered them into my budgeting app)
- Immediately enter appointments and other dates into the calendar on my phone instead of tossing reminder cards into the bottom of my purse
Last but not least, have a home for your purse
I used to spend precious time frantically hunting for my purse when leaving the house. Now I hang my everyday purse on a hook near the garage door and my purse never goes missing.

Divide and conquer even further
When you’ve got babies, it’s common to have your diaper bag do double-duty as a purse, but you might want to rethink that decision. If you keep a separate purse from the diaper bag, it’s much easier to hand over the baby to grandma.
With an organized purse, you’ll be ready for (almost) anything life throws your way.
Maybe even magical wardrobes and talking lions like in Narnia!
