What’s the best affordable phone and cell plan for teenagers? I’ve tried several different carriers and I can say without a doubt that Republic Wireless offers the best smartphone for the money. The Moto E is brand new out this fall and comes with a full-fledged Android system and a $99 price tag.
I’ve already told you how much I’m loving my own Moto from Republic. (See how much you’d save with a $10 or $25 plan from Republic.)
Why would you pay $40-100 a month for phone service with another provider?

Why the Moto E is the best phone for teenagers.
The Moto E phone from Republic Wireless is my top pick for teenagers because:
Teens are going to want a great camera for Instagram. The 5 mega pixel camera is quick to respond. Install the Instragram app and your teen is good to go.
Super cheap phone plans
For $10 a month plus another buck for taxes, you’re good to go. This is insanely cheap for a cell phone plan!
No reason to let texts run up the bill. This feature alone probably finalizes the decision for most parents.
No contract plan
If your teen decides to spring for his own iPhone in the future, you’re not tied into a contract.
With their $25 3G plan, you’ve got unlimited data. That should cover any need your teen has! Or cut back just a bit to their $10 a month plan and have your teen use all their data over a WIFI network. I promise you, they won’t miss a thing. This will leave you so much money leftover for kids’ allowances or shopping on Amazon (don’t miss these 3 secret features!).
How does Republic Wireless work?
Republic’s service is different than most other wireless carriers. If you’re connected to a WIFI network, it takes advantage of the WIFI connection to place your calls. This functionality is built in to the phone.
I tried this using an app on an old phone to save on minutes and it was just too clunky and unreliabled. Not so with my Moto. It makes calls just the same whether you’re using cell or WIFI service. If your WIFI connection is weak, you can always hit the “handover” button to switch to cell.
I make most of my calls over the WIFI network. When I’m out of the house, the cell network kicks in automatically.
Disadvantages of a $10 phone plan
Of course, this plan isn’t for everyone. Check out some of the reasons you might not want a Republic phone plan.
I really resist any services that tie me into a contract. I negotiate every bill I can (here’s a script for negotiating your utilities). With Republic, there are no contracts which means you’re always free to switch if something better comes along.
Giveaway: Moto E Smart Phone + 3 months 3G service
This giveaway has ended.
Republic Wireless is generously giving away a brand new Moto E plus 3 months of service to one lucky reader of Early Bird Mom. How cool is that?
This would make THE best present for a teenager this Christmas (and with their $10 a month plan, it won’t break your budget once the free months run out.) Giveaway ends Sunday at midnight EST. Please share with your friends!
U.S. addresses only please. Winner must be able to receive a delivery via FedEx (no P.O. boxes please).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a catch?
No – no catch. This really is a free phone, to be given to 1 lucky winner. And I really do use a similar phone (I have the Moto G) and the $10 a month plan. See my earlier Republic review for more details on my phone.
If you decide to purchase on your own, you will need to buy a phone from Republic. They don’t support other phones, primarily because of their WIFI dialing feature.
Are there any restrictions?
This giveaway is limited to U.S. residents. Also, the winner must be able to receive the prize package via Fedex (no P.O. boxes please).
What happens after the 3 months free service runs out?
When the winner activates the phone, he will receive instructions on setting up an account and how to pay for the service after the free 3 months is over. (Bonus tip – Republic provides 3 months of the $25 3G service BUT you can change to the $10 a month plan and get 7 free months!)
Is the texting really unlimited?
My kids just asked me this – yes – all their plans $10 a up have free, umlimited texting. This alone will save a fortune for parents of enthusiastic texting teenagers.
